Ford unveils a pair of foldable electric bikes
At this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Ford unveiled a pair of foldable electric bikes. Folding bikes have been around for quite some time and some of their manufacturers have started to add electric motors to some of their models. Ford chose to start with a blank slate and design two prototype models, the MoDe:Me and MoDe:Pro from scratch, though they did get some help from one of the most recognized folding bike brands - Dahon. Both models are powered by 200-watt motors and have rear-facing sensors that warn a cyclist when a car is overtaking them. The bikes link to the MoDe:Link iPhone 6 app, which offers navigation features like vibrating the handlebars tell to the rider which direction to turn. The bikes are part of an experiment by Ford called "Handle on Mobility" aiming to make journeys safer and more efficient. While there are no immediate plans to release the bikes for sale, Ford said they will help test alternative transportation ideas.
